Amazon Synopsis:

The prequel to Dracula, inspired by notes and texts left behind by the author of the classic novel, Dracul is a supernatural thriller that reveals not only Dracula’s true origins but Bram Stoker’s—and the tale of the enigmatic woman who connects them.

It is 1868, and a twenty-one-year-old Bram Stoker waits in a desolate tower to face an indescribable evil. Armed only with crucifixes, holy water, and a rifle, he prays to survive a single night, the longest of his life. Desperate to record what he has witnessed, Bram scribbles down the events that led him here....

A sickly child, Bram spent his early days bedridden in his parents' Dublin home, tended to by his caretaker, a young woman named Ellen Crone. When a string of strange deaths occur in a nearby town, Bram and his sister Matilda detect a pattern of bizarre behavior by Ellen—a mystery that deepens chillingly until Ellen vanishes suddenly from their lives. Years later, Matilda returns from studying in Paris to tell Bram the news that she has seen Ellen—and that the nightmare they've thought long ended is only beginning.

Review:

"The peculiarities of Ellen Crone. That is, of course, where I should start, for this is as much her story as it is mine, perhaps more so."

This brings a classic tale of old alive again. Even more so than Bram's Dracula, this gothic tale is unapologetically captivating. Imagery so vivid and written with such depth, one could not help but feel as if they had just stepped back in time, stood next to each character, listened to thier words as if whispered in the ears and every emotion felt deep within. As the story unfolds it forces one into the darkness and fear of the unknown. The evil that is ever watching and hunting.

Ellen Crone's life story was soulfully tragic, heartbreaking and she has become a character that I adore.

The journal entries written through the characters voices were very enjoyable and had a very nice pacing to the story. The entries gives us looks into the past and the present of Bram, Mathilda, Thornley and other characters points of view, what they had to endure and the dark journey they had no choice but to complete. Bram's journals in his present time were especially terrifying!

Enchanting from beginning to end, this is one that is timeless and legendary!

Brilliant!!

"Those eyes, though! My God, those eyes. His sloe-black eyes were death's own and yet they teemed with life."
